From building a national citizens movement that mobilized millions, to being held in the maximum security prisons of Zimbabwe, to rallying the world for justice and freedom, I've learned that there's nothing more fulfilling than living a life of courage. Within every person is the amazing potential to literally change the world.
ABOUT EVAN MAWARIRE
Charged with treason I sat helpless in a maximum security prison in Zimbabwe.
My crime was starting and leading a citizens movement that inspired millions to protest brutal dictatorship and demand an end to corruption, injustice and poverty. For nearly four years, my friends and I built without any prior training, a movement that organized non violent campaigns ranging from boycotts, public debates, petition signing and marches. Zimbabwe has been in a dictatorial grip for forty years. We've suffered democratic erosion, political violence, total economic collapse and horrifying poverty. Fed up, I recorded a 4-minute video that went viral and birthed #ThisFlag Citizens movement. We taught people to overcome fear, to imagine a new future and to speak truth to power.
"Despite being arrested eight times and tortured, my experiences taught me how to live and lead with courage and resilience in the face of persecution, and how to rally people around a transformative cause."
